Frozen in Time

Actually I wish I was frozen in time! As it is, time is rushing right past me!

It’s been 7 whole days since I have posted! Those of you have followed me for the past 2 1/2 years know what a record that is. I’ve enjoyed the few moments I’ve had to photograph winter, while most of my time has been devoted to the campaign. Thankfully, I’ve found a few moments to get by many of your blogs. You’ve been doing some great work!

Snowshadows

So many things draw our eyes during and after a snowfall. It was the shadows on the snow that turned my head this day.

The brilliant sun after a snowfall casts the most wonderful shadows on the snow.

And aren’t those snow sparkles fun?

They bring a smile to my face even on a zero degree morning. The sun sure helps, too!

Frozen Wildwood

For all who read my last post about Charlotte and marveled at the 50 degree temps in February, one week later it is 4 degrees. Our lovely 57 acre urban forest, Wildwood Park, is shining in it’s frozen glory.

To all my friends in the uber snowy northeast, I hope you have power and therefore warmth and water.

Locked Out!

Many of you already think I’m a little out of my mind for being a lover of winter.

I know, I know, I live in Virginia in the US and we don’t get a ton of snow. We do get some temps in the zero to 20 degrees F but nothing like those of you who live in places further north. To my credit, I did live in Vermont and in Northern Idaho and loved almost every cold moment, even to the point of working in a woodlot in a light jacket, and going winter camping.

Ultimately though, I embrace most weather types. The beauty of Virginia is that we have a distinct seasonal change, so right when you are tired of one season, the next one comes along.

Leave it to me though to run outside this morning, in my PJs, to get a shot of the first few snowflakes (SO excited!) only to find that I had locked myself out of the house!

All you photonuts out there get it, right? Anything (almost) for that shot!

The Back Story

When I pulled into the parking lot, the early morning sun was shining on a simple little bush outside of my office. Frankly, I’d never really paid attention to this bush, but today it was decorated with frost and it was beautiful.

I grabbed the camera, jumped out of the truck and crouched down to take the shot.

I was excited because I’ve felt a distinct lack of time with my camera lately,

and I’ve missed the creative flow that comes when the camera is in my hand.

So, did I take a few easy shots and walk into my office with contentment? Nope.

No sooner had I gotten into position than a patient pulled up and took the one parking place that got in the way of my shot. Seriously … every other space was empty!

Cracked. Me. Up.

I’m Dreaming

Yes! I’m dreaming of a White Christmas!

As Alys at Gardening Nirvana so amazingly remembered, I finally started to focus on Christmas – yesterday – the 20th of December.

Since my old fashioned Christmas (otherwise known as “just now focusing on the holiday”) is not yet white, I pulled up an image of January of 2013, and I’m thinking positive!!

(and by the way, this image has had very little post-processing. It really was this glorious that early morning almost 2 years ago)

Shop Window

The conference is over and it’s time to attend to an overfull week; a week filled with work, other commitments, and thankfully, with play. So while I’m anxious to share the photos from the auction, I’ll have to put that labor of love off for a few days.

As that long successful day drew to a close, winter’s setting sun lent beauty to dirty shop windows and the machines used to punch metal.

Taking a Break

This year’s Annual Meeting of the Virginia Council of Nurse Pracitioners is being held at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, Virginia. During one brief break period, I dashed outside to feel the warmth of the winter sun and to use the camera to photograph something besides NPs in the conference setting.

The Reston Town Center has an outdoor Ice Skating Pavilion and on this beautiful, 60 degree day, I was drawn to photograph this unique facility against the bright blue sky.

The strong lines of the human made structure against the natural clouds and trees provided a striking contrast.

When I finally directed my gaze downward, I had to smile at what I saw.

Refreshed and energized, I headed back inside to continue the work of the conference.
