From the Deck: The New River

The snow has stopped and spring has truly arrived!  It’s time for motorcycle rides, outdoor festivals, baseball games (that’s for you, Ralph), and Happy Hours out of doors.  Okay, and yard work.

Bull & Bones at the River (http://www.bullandbones.com/?q=river) has a wonderful deck overlooking The New River and it’s a wonderful place to enjoy a glass of wine with friends at the end of a long day at work.  And of course, the early evening light is perfect for photography.

Something About A Window

An organization that I belong to held a meeting at a local church last evening.  Grace Episcopal  has been a part of the Radford community for over 100 years and is a lovely old building.  As I walked up to the church, I was struck by the windows.

From the inside they were even more beautiful, and against the setting sun, were the color of amber.

As I left the house this morning, I decided to run by and take one more picture, this time of the the building, and not just the windows.  What a difference a day makes!!  Yesterday was sunny and bright.  Today a 6 inch snowfall!

The Colors of Nature (and the new bike!)

It was a beautiful evening … one of those times when the light captures the colors of nature perfectly!  I met with Pam to enjoy a glass or two of wine after work and the view was our reward for working hard (well, the view AND the wine AND the friendship).

The Farm, Up Close and Personal

About a month ago, I posted a photo of a red barn that I had been eyeing from the road for over a year.  I took that picture while leaning way over the fence.  The owner gave me permission to access the land and so this past Saturday I spent some time walking around taking pictures of the barn and miniature horses.  It was a bright, beautiful day, so much so that the red on the barn was a bit washed out in the sun.

How strange that just two days ago, I was walking around on a sunny 50+ degree day and ever since, we have had low temps and a Christmas type snowfall.

Fall leaves … in a snowshower … at the beginning of spring

Evidence!

I was heading home last evening after a long (but good) day when the shadows that appeared like stripes on the grass caught my eye.  The scene revealed evidence of the past winter, the recent flood and the coming of spring.

Day 5-7- Williamsburg: The Warmth of Brick

It’s been an excellent conference, filled with opportunities for increasing knowledge and catching up with friends and colleagues, with time for good food and wine and even a little fun!

This morning I also found some time to get out early and shoot some of the sights around the restored area of Williamsburg.  I took many photos, but what struck me the most was how warm the bricks looked with the 6:30 am sun shining on them.

Day 2 – Richmond: A Bookstore Manager’s Suspicion

After a most excellent meeting , I found myself with 4, count ’em, FOUR, hours to myself!  Amazing!

Knowing that I would have time tomorrow to look at some of Richmond’s older architecture and shop in non-chain stores, I decided to use this time to get some work done.  I located a huge bookstore complete with free wifi and delicious unsweet tea.  After purchasing the obligatory book (obligatory because I can’t ever walk into a book store and not buy at least buy one book), I sat down to work.

Sure enough, I was soon distracted by the sun shining through the big windows and on the various objects around me.  I wandered the book store for an hour or so, shooting whatever caught my eye.  I guess I attracted attention because the very nice store manager came up, introduced  himself and informed me that the store did not allow photography without corporate permission.  I explained that I was an amateur photographer and was practicing indoor shooting.  I then showed him my pictures and offered to delete.  He looked at them, was incredibly kind and said no problem – keep them.

Yeah, I’m not impressed with them either!  haha!

Nah, they aren’t that bad  … and his gracious attitude will be what I carry with me from that store (besides the mystery that I will read at night after long days in my upcoming conference).
