Pier Love

If you’re like me, and I know many of you are, you come home from your travels with almost too many photos to look through, process, save or delete. How can it be that a simple 4 day trip to the Middle Peninsula of Virginia could yield over 400 photos?

Perhaps I should just PUT THE CAMERA DOWN.

_MG_6952

Since that will never happen, it was time to get to work!  In reviewing the photos from my time on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia, it was clear that one object garnered much of my attention.

_MG_6743

What was it about this pier that kept catching my eye?

_MG_6876

Was it the obvious presence of it?

_MG_6809 _MG_6829

Or it’s ability to stand quietly in the background?

_MG_7141

Was it more striking against the colors of a cloudy sunrise?

_MG_7140

Or did conversion to black and white bring out the beauty?

_MG_6974 _MG_6827

Perhaps it’s attraction was stronger after a storm?

_MG_7136 _MG_7133

Or maybe because it held memories of a lovely evening with friends?

_MG_6724

Whatever the reason, I came home with too many pier photos to count.  I’ve picked the best of the lot and shared them with you here.  And if you’re still with me after viewing the first 12, I’ll hope you can handle just one more.

_MG_6951

You may have seen this before.  It’s my favorite and as a amateur photographer, one that I am quite proud of.

Thanks for hanging in there with me as I present this photographic study of a Middle Peninsula pier.

Fresh from the Bay

The first half of my vacation is over but the memories of the Middle Peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and the beaches of Delaware keep me smiling.  There is much I want to share with you but since I leave for Kentucky in the morning, I thought I would share just a few photos from our fresh crab and tuna steak shopping trip.

Aren’t the colors of those crabs vibrant?  These photos are unedited; the color is true.

The fisherman working that day, saw my camera and offered to let me walk out onto this fairly rickety dock.  From that vantage point I was able to photograph some of the surrounding docks.

The weather those first three days was what some might consider less than “beachy”, but for me and my friends, it did not matter.

We were happy just to be together and to explore the culture, marine life, and food that the Middle Peninsula of Virginia offers.

What an incredible place!

Here She Comes!

The day was beautiful so while on the way home after a lovely visit with friends, I pulled the truck over along the New River.  It was the middle of the day and the sun was bright.

  _MG_4739

Only a couple minutes had gone by before I heard the familiar whistle of an approaching train.

_MG_4744

We love our trains here in the New River Valley (you may remember a post about the steam engines that recently came through).

_MG_4746

Once the train had passed over the trestle, I reflected (pardon the pun) on the fact that from this view the new Memorial Bridge can be seen in the distance, and the remains of the old, original train trestle as well.

_MG_4754

The beauty of the river, the architecture of the trestle, and the romance of a train … not a bad way to spend a few moments.

What is it About Water?

No matter where I am, if water is near by, I am in it!

Whether to swim, float, stick my feet in, walk over, or sit by.

Soothing, restoring, fulfilling, and just plan fun!

During my ride last weekend, I had the chance to walk over an old steel bridge, to play in a bubbling creek, and to get soaked in a short downpour.  More bridge shots will come in a later post, but for now … enjoy the rejuvenation of water.  I sure did!

From the Deck: The New River

The snow has stopped and spring has truly arrived!  It’s time for motorcycle rides, outdoor festivals, baseball games (that’s for you, Ralph), and Happy Hours out of doors.  Okay, and yard work.

Bull & Bones at the River (http://www.bullandbones.com/?q=river) has a wonderful deck overlooking The New River and it’s a wonderful place to enjoy a glass of wine with friends at the end of a long day at work.  And of course, the early evening light is perfect for photography.

Train Trestle over the New River

I had hoped to spend Sunday riding the new bike but rain, clouds, and cooler temps kept the bike covered and on the carport.  On the way home from taking Easter morning biscuits to a dear friend, I stopped to photograph one of the train trestles that crosses over the New River near Radford City / Pulaski County.  The fog, clouds, and grey day did not present as much of a challenge to me as my lack of zoom!  Each session of shooting finds me lusting for an SLR.

(But that’s another story)

I wasn’t able to get a clear shot of the trestle, and after viewing the photo in B&W, I was glad.  With the vines hanging down in front, I thought the scene looked really mysterious.

A train crossed over the trestle while I was standing underneath.

The sun came out just a bit after that and brightened the rust color of the trestle.

It was then that I noticed the graffiti … and the date that the trestle was built.

The original trestle’s supports remain,

and I love that a tree grows out of the top of one of them,

The Colors of Nature (and the new bike!)

It was a beautiful evening … one of those times when the light captures the colors of nature perfectly!  I met with Pam to enjoy a glass or two of wine after work and the view was our reward for working hard (well, the view AND the wine AND the friendship).

Reflections

Yesterday was very cold, with an almost bone chilling rain.

Today, the sun returned!  And it cast lovely reflections on the puddles and creeks that I passed on the way to work.  As I was running alongside the road to get these pictures, I had 2 people stop to offer help.  It must look strange to see a woman running down the side of the road in skirt and heels.  I hold my camera high so folks can see what I’m up to, but it must not be obvious enough!

As I turned around to get back in the truck, I was taken by the pretty green color of the tree lichen.

Not a bad way to start the work day!
