My son’s negative Covid test meant that we were able to travel to Atlanta for a 48 hr stay over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Despite being home to over 6 million people, we were able to remain socially distanced and follow precautions while thoroughly enjoying the outdoor festive decorations.
These images are a mixture of Fuji and Android, most taken on the fly in cccoooolllllddddd temps. I’m definitely not bragging about these shots … just trying to give you a taste of the city!
We stayed in Midtown and despite the frigid temps, the sun was shining and we braved the cold to explore the area.
We stayed at the Georgian Terrace Hotel which opened it’s doors in 1911.
The Georgian Terrace Hotel is right down the street from St. Marks United Methodist Church which was erected in 1902.
We spent Christmas evening at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens which boasts an incredible light show set to music. Truly magical!
What a joy it was to be with family in such beautiful outdoor surroundings. I am a fortunate woman indeed!

Joe – Atlanta is a fun city for sure, and I love the Midtown area … the funky, artsy, great restaurant and architecture part of the city. I thought of Patti as I walked the streets – although we didn’t walk long because of the sub-freezing temps. My images are not street like Patti’s but I thought of her when I was out there none the less.
Anyway … I cannot wait to stop working these long days and spend more time improving my photography. I so appreciate your help in that regard!

Glad you were able to spend time with your son, Laurie. The lights in Atlanta remind me of Thanksgiving 2019 when I was able to see the Christmas lights at the National Zoo in D.C. They were gorgeous!

The National Zoo sounds wonderful! I love that so many outdoor venues have been doing light shows these past few years. Lights are so festive and they make us happy!

Hello sweet friend! What a fantastic stay. I’ve not been to Atlanta but clearly, Christmas is a beautiful time to visit. The lights wrapping the trees near the hotel are magical before you even get to the garden!! My neighbour wrapped his trees with tiny solar lights, he lights them all year. It’s like Las Vegas over there, LOL ! I might copy him and hang them up over the summer. Still winter here of course, so it’d be nice to imagine a little holiday without snow. Hey!? Funny thing about lights … I put white lights on my front porch last Christmas and just never took them down. All year long I enjoyed the lights … whether from the inside looking out or while sitting on the porch with friends or by myself reading a book. They didn’t actually burn out until the end of October! Then, I decided that I loved them so much that when I put new ones up this year, I did so knowing that I’d leave them up all year long. Happiness! Now though, I need to look for solar lights!
Lights make it feel like a holiday everyday! My neighbour, Harry (like the prince 😁 That’s how I remember it, ha!) said he ordered his lights on Amazon.

Hi Sheryl – good to hear from you! Most people think of Atlanta as just a big city with too much traffic, but I have found it to have great architecture, lots of old, beautiful trees, fascintating history, and Piedmont Park is similar to Central Park. And yes, the lights were so festive and pretty!

Your images are beautiful, Laurie. I only had a few days in Atlanta, but they were memorable ones. It was thrilling meeting President Carter and attending Carter Center events. I enjoyed the museum, and by day, the Botanical Gardens. They were beautiful then, so I can only imagine all the lights. I hope to return one day.

As I look at the date that you wrote your comment, I realize that you wrote BEFORE the insanity in DC and AFTER the excitement of Georgia. To quote the Wicked Witch of the West “what a world, what a world”. BIG Sigh!
Anyway, I remember your story of meeting the Carters and the one where they called you, too! Greg and I fully intend to visit the Carter Center and the MLK National Historical Park. We just need enough time so we don’t have to rush.

Ah yes, what a world, what a world. I’m still struggling to absorb it, and trying not to stress out over the upcoming inauguration. I remember the Watergate days, when the news seemed to change every two hours. It’s felt that way for the past four years.
I went to bed that Tuesday with one solid win for Georgia. I woke up hopeful, and what a thrill. Then the Capital riots unfolded while I was volunteering downtown. It’s surreal. I miss traveling, and hope to make it back to DC, Virginia, Georgia, etc. one day. Big hug, my friend.
