you get past his characterization of

an entire ethnic group as rapists,

murderers and drug dealers, and say

you excuse the insults he’d slung at

the Senator who spent five years

in a prisoner of war camp; now say

you find a tiny space in your heart

to forgive him for disparaging women

in the most deplorable terms imaginable,

and dismiss his answer to mass shootings

is to put guns in kindergarten classrooms

as jest. And you struggle to digest

the comparison of his sacrifices

constructing tall buildings full of

boardrooms and bathrooms

with the parent’s loss of a child who

made the ultimate sacrifice fighting

for the freedom to prosper. Say

you pardon these transgressions figuring
