How often do you pass by a building or place, maybe even every day, and even though you know it has intriguing characteristics, you never stop for a closer look? The New Mt Olive M.E. Church has always drawn my attention, but I’ve never taken the time to investigate.
The church sits on a hill in a neighborhood off one of the main roads in my small city.
As I rode by on the bike one day, with rain threatening, I decided to stop and check it out.
The building materials are simple … and reveal signs of wear.
The church was originally built in 1889, but was either renovated or rebuilt in 1929.
I think what attracts me most is the way it sits up there on that hill, somewhat majestic and slightly imposing.
Wonder what it’s like inside?
The church sure is standing proud!
I agree! That is what is really the most impressive thing to me
Nice pics. The steps to the front door look intense! A simple yet impressive building. Thanks for sharing LB.
You said it perfectly … simple but impressive!
What an interesting church, and the way you’ve photographed some of the shots it looks almost medieval. Nice!
Thanks Mary … it’s really an interesting structure for a small appalachian city in Southwest VA .
What’s it like inside? Go in and find out, LB! Sometimes the folks in the office will allow you inside to take pictures. My friend and I asked, and she had a lovely photo op in a grand church in Huntsville two years ago. Can’t wait to see the inside… 🙂
I do need to do that Lynda … and you’ve given me the encouragement to get it done. I’ll follow up!
😉
Yes I agree, there are many building I see regularly but don’t take the time to actually look at the building…I just may do that after this post! Such a regal looking church…you should see if you can take photos inside, I’m sure it won’t disappoint!
Thanks Heather … I need to check on seeing the inside (and finding out a bit more history!)
Yep, inside would be interesting too 🙂
Someday …. soon 🙂
Looks darn good for how old it is. Looks like the roof top garden is taking hold, love that shot. Good eye LB. I guess they didn’t have to worry about being handicap accessible back then, look at all those stairs. I might be wrong but, were people more capable back then. I sometimes feel like a woozy with my electric everything and indoor plumbing LOL. Did you get caught in the rain?
Don’t those stairs look imposing? I’m not sure how folks get in … even the lower floor entrances are on hills. and yes … don;t take away my indoor plumbing!!!
Nice pics. I sure wish I had the time to stop and explore everything I find interesting.
Wouldn’t that be a lovely thing?
The church looks mysteriuos LB , Stunning photography Thanks for sharing 🙂
Well thanks for such a nice comment!
