Greg and I had the great good fortune to spend a night at the Visitation Hotel in Frederick Maryland. The hotel has an interesting history as a cloistered monastery and internationally renowned academic institution. Originally built in 1824, the structure survived fires in 1845 and in 2023, and finally opened as a boutique hotel in December 2024.
We also enjoyed an amazing dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, the Wye Oak Tavern, started by James Beard-nominated and “Top Chef” stars, Bryan and Michael Voltaggio. Truly, an incredible evening. So incredible, in fact, that I did not take many photos. The food was divine!
The restaurant is located in the former Visitation Chapel, and in order for the restaurant to move forward, the Chapel had to be deconsecrated. Fascinating! You can read about that process here.

The food was delicious and the stories, almost as good. The bar is the former alter and our server told us that some in town were not happy about a former chapel being turned into a bar. Someday I’ll show you my (terrible) photos of the stained glass windows over the alter / bar. Gorgeous!

Well, let’s put it this way … I was distracted by my delicious food and drink AND I would like to go back when no one else was in there!
What a pretty courtyard! I love learning about history. It must’ve been quite the job retrofitting a property built in 1824 for new electrical and plumbing. Glad they were able to save it after fires! I like how they served your wine carafe! I always order a glass of ice with my wine because I like it extra chilled. We’re off to Victoria, BC Sunday for a little get-away. It’s nice to be pampered sometimes 😉 💛K
So how was Victoria??? I’ve been once to BC, along time ago, to ski at Whistler. Now … I am not a skiier but oh my it was a gorgeous placed to be! Victoria is on my list of places to visit!
Hey luv ! Victoria has been awesome, yet extremely warm. Bit of a heat wave going on. Breaking tomorrow, but we’re on our way home 😆 Whistler is awesome, glad you got there once. I love the coast. It really suites me both spiritually and emotionally. Nature and wildlife are never far away. We saw an IMAX show today, called Otters. It was filmed on the coast of BC and was so dear. The film featured a mom and her pup through the first year of his life. I hope you can visit one day 🩷xK
