As Greg and I walked through the Upper West Side on our way to dinner and then to see John Oliver and Seth Myers at the Beacon Theater, we passed through the Columbia Avenue Business District. We soon learned about Open Streets, a concept where the streets are closed off to motorized vehicles and allow people (and their pets) to replace automobile traffic for a few hours. Without cars, streets become a massive public space where people of all ages, abilities, and economic backgrounds can come together to exercise, and play

Columbus Ave was full of families and individuals walking and cycling,

playing Chess and Badminton,

And generally enjoying community on a beautiful evening. What a concept!

This is a great concept Laurie. It makes a congested city feel a little more European where people could mingle. Excellent images π
We loved it, too, and yes, it seems quite European. There was such a good and happy vibe
I love this idea too! They do this in Canmore, AB during the summer. The street they close is full of restaurants and cool shops. Google it for an eye full of Canada π¨π¦ I was in Burlington, Vermont last fall and they have an awesome main street that does the same (Bernie Sanders hood, who I adore and admire). It’s so fun to wander and maybe enjoy a drink along the way. π§‘π§‘
There is a small town in Ohio that allows you to walk with your beverage. So fun!
I have put Canmore on our “places to visit” list, since we plan to be in Banff at some point and, of course, we want to see you!!
Exciting!! I would love to see you there !! π§‘π§‘
Itβs a wonderful concept. I applaud the bringing together of community.
Such a great way to make connections!
Yes!
Great shots, Laurie, and what a nice concept. Hope the show was fun!! π
Jane, we absolutely loved seeing John and Seth. They are both so funny, and they did a 20 minute Q&A together at the end. All that plus, we were in an historic, 100 yr old theater. A great evening!
